about

The story of The Qualitons began in 2007 when DJ/producer Kanada Káosz, after several years of organizing "What Da Funk" events in Budapest, was invited to DJ at the Berlin Soul Ascension Festival (SAF). As a real fan of live Funk and R&B bands he had always thought that it was a shame that Hungary didn't have a single band in these genres. When he saw some of the greatest funk/soul/beat bands playing at the SAF (incl. The Soul Investigators, Afrobeat Academy, Whitefield Brothers) he went back to Budapest inspired to organize such a band in Hungary. He went to dozens of concerts to hand-pick musicians for this project. Those who he asked were totally up for the idea and surprisingly told him that they had always wanted to play in such a band but no one never asked them! All of them had attended and graduated from the Department of Jazz at the Franz Liszt Music Academy, the most prestigious college of music in Hungary.

The band were named after the living memory of the former Hungarian Recording Company „Qualiton” – a record label which existed from the late 50s up to the 70s. At first the band's repertoire consisted of cover-versions from rare Hungarian 7" singles as well as some of Kaosz’s all-time favourite tunes from around the world. However, they soon started to write their own songs. Ever since their first concert in 2008 they have received massive national and international support. They released two 7" singles on Munich’s Tramp Records and were featured on a compilation entitled Contemporary Funk (TR-9005). In 2009 they successfully toured Germany and Spain. They have appeared on radio playlists all over the world (including Australia, USA and Japan) and have given interviews to several international magazines (including TimeOut Budapest and Enlace Funk in Spain). On top of all this they have also written and performed the scores for two independant Hungarian films, "Kolorádó Kid" and "Kulo City".

The Qualitons' first big break through came when Kaosz produced shows with the veteran Hungarian soul-rock singer Kati Kovács. Along with his DJ-mates from Brakecsokkerz (a Hungarian vinyl heritage collective comprising of Kaosz, Suhaid, Shuriken & Haze) Kaosz compiled her best tunes and gave them to her. The Qualitons and Kati Kovács rehearsed these and then went on tour around Hungary. The tour brought a great deal of attention from the Hungarian media, as this was dubbed by them as "The Comeback of Kati Kovács". The strength behind Kati's big comeback was, of course, The Qualitons!
